SWORD Method 

The SWORD Method is a way to study Scripture that has you use basic questions about the passage you are reading to help see the bigger picture of the passage.

  1. Begin by reading the passage a couple times. Summarize what you read in your own words.

  2. Blade Tip: What does this passage say about God?
    (character, actions, relation to us)

  3. Handle: What does this passage say about man?
    (human nature, tendencies, etc)

  4. Right Blade Edge: Are there promises to believe? Are there commands to obey? Are there examples to follow?

  5. Left Blade Edge: Are there sins to avoid? Are there warnings to heed?

  6. Hilt: What is the author’s main point? How do I need to respond?
